University of Melbourne Investment Forum – 9 August 2016
The social responsibility of the University of Melbourne
In early August, ACCSR’s Managing director Dr. Leeora was part of a panel of experts discussing the social responsibility of the University of Melbourne (UoM) at the UoM Investment Forum.
The UoM strives to be one of the finest universities in the world, and utilises its strategy, Growing Esteem, to recognise the importance of sustainability and paving the way for the Charter adopted earlier in the year.
This strategy is adopted alongside its self-proclaimed ‘grand challenge’ of climate change, and the universities role in social responsibility and mitigating the effects of climate change. The UoM has a strong research history within climate change and sustainability.
Dr. Black discusses how the university should be taking action by reducing the University’s carbon footprint and putting plans in place to achieve carbon neutrality within a reasonable period of time, as well as many other tips and hints for a better sustainable future.
Dr. Black also discusses how The UoM can become a conscious investor and set out specific terms for engagement and continued investment into carbon intensive and fossil fuel companies, assisting companies in their transition to a carbon constrained (or zero) future.
